CONSTELLATIONS OF OPPORTUNITIES: ASTROTOURISM AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN BRAZIL

Abstract

This article explores astrotourism as a strategy for sustainable regional development in Brazil, highlighting its potential, challenges, and implications for public policy formulation. The research adopts a qualitative and exploratory approach, based on a literature review and comparative analysis with international experiences, such as those in Portugal and Chile. The results indicate that Brazil has favorable natural conditions, including low light pollution and scenic landscapes in regions like Serra da Mantiqueira, Chapada dos Veadeiros and the Sertão Nordestino. However, limitations such as insufficient infrastructure and the lack of light pollution regulations still constrain the growth of this activity. The study suggests that the certification of dark-sky areas, combined with investments in infrastructure and community engagement, can consolidate astrotourism as a sustainable activity, generating jobs and income for small municipalities. Integration with other sustainable tourism modalities, such as ecotourism and cultural tourism, enhances its economic and environmental impact, fostering more balanced regional development. The conclusion emphasizes that the success of astrotourism depends on effective public policies and local initiatives, promoting environmental conservation while stimulating new economic opportunities for the communities involved.
